Jazz Band

The Spartan Jazz Band is an advanced-level ensemble, focusing on the refinement of individual skills through the performance of high-quality literature. The ensemble meets daily.  Many students in the ensemble are enrolled in multiple music classes.  Spartan Jazz Band musicians are eligible to participate in extra-curricular ensembles, such as marching or pep band, as well as Metro 8 auditions and Solo and Ensemble contest. Many students in the Spartan Jazz Band choose to enroll in private lessons on their instrument

The Spartan Jazz Band typically gives 3-4 performances each year, including participation in local jazz festivals in the spring semester.

Jazz Ensemble

The Spartan Jazz Ensemble is the premier jazz ensemble at Francis Howell Central High School. Following a traditional big band format, the reduced instrumentation fosters individual responsibility and musicianship amongst all students. The ensemble meets daily.  Most students in the ensemble are enrolled in multiple music classes (with a few taking three or more), take private lessons, and participate in extracurricular ensembles, such as marching band or a jazz combo.

The Spartan Jazz Ensemble typically gives 3-4 performances each year, including participation in local jazz festivals in the spring semester.

In 2016, the Spartan Jazz Ensemble became the first high school band of any kind from the Francis Howell School District to perform at the MMEA In-Service Workshop/Conference in 45 years.
