Concert Bands

Concert Band

The Spartan Concert Band is the foundational ensemble of the Spartan Band program. Students will learn the structures, techniques, and methods needed to pursue membership in upper-level band courses. Spartan Concert Band musicians are eligible to participate in extra-curricular ensembles, such as marching or pep band, as well as Metro 8 auditions and Solo and Ensemble contest. Many students in the Spartan Concert Band choose to enroll in private lessons on their instrument. 

The Spartan Concert Band typically gives two concerts a year, and participates in MSHSAA Large Ensemble contest.

Concert Band is open to all students, and required for all freshmen participating in band classes.

Symphonic Band

The Spartan Symphonic Band is an advanced-level ensemble, focusing on the refinement of individual skills through the performance of high-quality literature. The ensemble meets daily.  Many students in the ensemble are enrolled in multiple music classes.  Spartan Symphonic Band musicians are eligible to participate in extra-curricular ensembles, such as marching or pep band, as well as Metro 8 auditions and Solo and Ensemble contest. Many students in the Spartan Concert Band choose to enroll in private lessons on their instrument. 

The Spartan Symphonic Band typically gives two concerts a year, and participates in MSHSAA Large Ensemble contest.

Symphonic Band is open to students who have completed a full year of Concert Band, or for transfer students at the directors’ discretion.

Wind Ensemble

The Spartan Wind Ensemble is the premier concert ensemble at Francis Howell Central High School. Following a traditional wind ensemble format, the reduced instrumentation fosters individual responsibility and musicianship amongst all students. The ensemble meets daily.  Most students in the ensemble are enrolled in multiple music classes (with a few taking three or more), take private lessons, and participate in extracurricular ensembles, such as marching band or a jazz combo.

The Spartan Wind Ensemble typically gives 3-4 performances each year, including participation in MSHSAA Large Ensemble contest.

In 2020, the Spartan Wind Ensemble became the first high school concert band from the Francis Howell School District to perform at the MMEA In-Service Workshop/Conference in 45 years.
