Policies

VISITATION POLICY

The herbarium is open to students, researchers, and for public tours by appointment Monday through Friday. Tours for visitors can be arranged by contacting Dr. David McKenzie, dmckenz1@emporia.edu or by calling the Division of Biological Sciences Office at 620-341-5311. Please include your name, the date of your visit, your project or area of interest, and your institutional affiliation.

INCOMING PLANT MATERIAL

All plant material that is brought into the herbarium must be treated to avoid potential insect contamination. Please give any plants coming into the herbarium to a staff member.

COLLECTION USE POLICY

The collections are available for use by all researchers. We expect that all specimens will be handled with care. Researchers and students are requested not to attempt to file specimens. Please leave them for the herbarium staff to re-file.

ANNOTATION POLICY

Researchers are encouraged to annotate specimens they examine. Annotations should be made with archival ink or printed on acid-free paper. The labels should include the determination, researcher’s name, date, and institution of affiliation. Annotation labels should be placed either above or to the left of the specimen label if possible.

LOAN POLICY

Herbarium specimens are available to scientists for research and education. Loans for educational purposes may be obtained from the teaching collection. All loan requests should be directed to Dr. David McKenzie, dmckenz1@emporia.edu. Specimens to be shipped will be packed to insure safe arrival and should be returned in the same manner. Please specify the expected duration of your loan. Loan extensions may be requested.
