OUR MISSION

Takenaka Laboratory of the University of Tokyo is conducting research on silicon photonics. Si Photonics is a technology system for manufacturing photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on Si substrates using the CMOS technology. With the progress of CMOS manufacturing technology, large-scale photonic integrated circuits that integrate a large number of photonic devices have become feasible, and the research of Si photonics is being actively conducted all over the world. Si photonics is now the standard platform for large-scale photonic integrated circuits. As the circuit scale gradually increases, its applications are expanding beyond optical communications for data centers to computing such as AI and quantum information processing, and optical sensing such as optical radars and biosensors. Our laboratory is conducting research on new devices, circuits, and system applications based on silicon photonics, aiming to create optoelectronic integrated circuits that will open up the AI ​​/ IoT era in the 21st century. We are looking for students who want to open up a new future through Si photonics.
