Helping children fulfill their role as students and prepare them for college, career, and community integration. Utilizing prevention, promotion, and intervention strategies for mental and physical health and well-being.
Dr. McKinley has been practicing as a licensed physical therapist for almost 9 years, and has been working in the Dunkirk School District for 5 years. She is the Physical Therapist for the school district, and travels across the district to provide physical therapy services. The majority of the time she is at School 5, school 7, and the middle school. She loves her job, and has a passion for working with children and improving the way they move, their posture and body awareness, and their overall gross motor development.
Dr. McKinley graduated with her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Daemen College. In the educational setting, physical therapy addresses the functional physical needs of a child within the school curriculum. Physical therapy targets the gross motor skills, and movements of the large muscle groups. Some examples of functional physical needs in the educational setting include participation in class activities, maintaining positions or changing positions, postural support (for example sitting upright at a desk or sitting on the floor), traveling through the school environment (including emergency evacuations), managing stairs, negotiating the cafeteria, and engaging in play/physical activity. Physical therapists also assist students with breaking down tasks into smaller parts before putting the functional task together. For example, skipping, a child must be able to stand on a single leg, then hop on a single leg before they can master the complex skill known as skipping.
Outside of work, Dr. McKinley loves spending time with her family and friends, especially her husband and their 9-month old son. She also enjoys being outside, cycling, crafting, coffee, exercising, photography, reading, and shopping.

My name is Mrs. Kurgan. I am a mother of 4, grandmother of 5, a wife, sister, daughter and aunt. I have been a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) since 2008, when I went back to college with my daughter. I became an COTA because I like meeting new people and I like helping people become the best they can be. I have been working throughout the Dunkirk School District since 2013. I have worked at School 3, 4, 5, Middle School, High School and PTECH.
Occupational Therapists are great resources for students, teachers and parents. Many people think that we only work on handwriting in the schools, but that is simple not true. The way we interpret what we see, hear and do affects everything we do every day. We break daily tasks into small parts, make sure all the parts are working properly, then put them back together so that we can use them successfully.
If you ever want to hear more, feel free to contact me at skurgan@g.dunkirkcsd.org. I look forward to meeting you.

I have been working as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) for about 20 years now. I used to work for a contract company so I was able to work in several different school districts including Buffalo, Grand Island, Silver Creek and more! I have been working in the Dunkirk school district for about 5 years now. I get to travel around the district but find myself mostly at school 3 and school 4 and the 3 and 4 year old pre K programs at St Hyacinths and Holy Trinity.
I love my job! I enjoy adapting activities to make them engaging for the students so they think they are just having a great time in school but really they are building the skills they need to be successful students in the classroom! ;) Feel free to email me with any concerns or questions you have about your child or OT in general!

I have been working as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) for just under 2 years now. This will be my third school year in the Dunkirk District and I have really found my place here. I became a COTA because I was excited to help people of all ages learn to strive and adapt daily tasks to be within reach of the needs of each individual. The goal is to be successful. :)
I grew up locally here and am so excited to continue being a part of this community. In my spare time, you can find my dogs, husband, friends and I hiking and traveling. Remember, everyone needs leisure time!
