The Dunkirk City School District is 1:1 with Chromebooks in Grades 3-8 as of September 2019. English Language Arts classrooms as well as co-taught classrooms also have access to classroom carts of Chromebooks and each elementary school has additional chromebook carts available for use in Grades PK-2 and special subjects (music, art, PE). However, technology alone has never been enough to address our student’s learning needs. To make full use of these new capabilities, we need to provide educators and leaders with the professional learning opportunities and support they need to transform learning inside and outside of the classroom.
District leadership started with their attendance in the Summer of 2019 at the Learning and Leading in the Digital Age conference featuring George Curous. During their time together - administrators explored what a classroom and building with an Innovator's Mindset might include and began to discuss promoting the positive things in our district using social media. Twitter accounts were created and the hashtags #DunkirkLearns and #DunkirkLeads decided upon for sharing the great things happening in our buildings. The leadership team will all have copies of The Innovator's Mindset and the ability to continue learning through discussions at admin meetings around the book.
Building principals continued their learning and planning together at the Principal's Leadership Retreat in Holiday Valley. Featuring Peter DeWitt sharing around building Collaborative Leadership, the principals worked on developing common language and how to build common understanding in their buildings
