In the Mystery strategy, the teacher first identifies a concept to be learned and crafts an essential question or problem for students to solve. The solution the mystery is then found via clues provided to students that lead them to the answer to the mystery.
The Mystery Strategy follows a pretty simple progression.
The mystery strategy is a riff on inquiry-based learning and works because student curiosity drives ownership of the learning. Students are drawn into the mystery and are motivated to solve it. The solution can only be found by learning the information presented through the strategy.
BreakoutEDU offers a pseudo-tech platform for implementing the mystery strategy. The only real breakdown between the structure of a traditional BreakoutEDU activity and the Mystery strategy is that Breakouts tend to provide an initial question and then students are responsible for unraveling the mystery on their own in any way they choose, whereas the Mystery strategy is a little more structured in that it asks students to do specific things with clues.
