The first thing we do every morning is meet on the carpet for a classroom community building, some singing, to check the weather, calendar time, and to check our weekly jobs. We then read and discuss a story.
Students transition to their tables to work on handwriting readiness and/or independent writing. These activities range from coloring, drawing, tracing, cutting, gluing, fine motor activities, arts and crafts, etc. We work on strengthening our grasp, coordination, emergent writing skills, etc. As students finish their activities, they head to the carpet to read while they wait for literacy circle to begin.
At literacy circle, we usually discuss weekly vocabulary terms related to our unit, practice letter identification, formation, and sounds, and all things related to literacy.
One of students' favorite parts of the day is centers. For center time, students have free choice in the available centers. Centers are a great time for students to learn and practice social emotional skills, continue learning as they play and explore, and develop interpersonal skills with others. During this time Ms. Fox might work with students either one on one or in small groups to work on skills, catch up on work, or assess what students know.
Students will come back to the carpet for our whole group math lesson.
During this time, we go outside to the playground where students have about 30 minutes of free play time. They develop social and emotional skills, gross motor skills, and play skills in a more unstructured environment. When weather won't let us go outside, we will find fun and 'special' indoor activities to do during this time.
Students have 30 minutes to eat lunch in the cafeteria.
After lunch and a short calm down time, students meet on the carpet for circle time. Some days have different topics than others, so we cover social studies, science, health, technology, fine arts, and more during this particular circle time.
The first 10-15 minutes of this time students listen to a read aloud and go to the bathroom while a teacher sets up the cots. We take the last few minutes to calm down our bodies and minds while we continue to set the mood for nap time.
If students don't sleep, they have the option of reading a book or laying quietly instead.
After rest time, students put their things away and come to carpet for a story. They also use the restroom during this time.
Our second round of centers will go through just like the first. Just like in the morning, Ms. Fox might work with students either one on one or in small groups to work on skills, catch up on work, or assess what students know.
Once we have finished centers, students meet on the carpet and are told what their next activity is. In some ways table time is similar to our handwriting time. Other times it may look different. We will do a wide range of activities during this time ranging from art work and crafts to academic activities like sorting, counting, identifying, and exploring different components of content areas (literacy, math, science, social studies)
When students are done with their table work, they are able to get their snack. Once finished, they can start packing up. Once students are done packing they can read a book.
We will go back outside for our second recess time. When weather won't allow us to go out, we will do another "special" indoor recess time.
We will come back inside, grab a quick drink of water, and then meet on the carpet for our closing circle. This is where we talk about our day, what we learned, and things we loved about school.
Students will grab their belongings and go home for the day!
