Special Information about Academic Contests

Large School/Small School Categories:

We will not have large and small school categories for academic events. All events will compete in one contest pool.

Judges/Graders:

Schools must provide judges for all events. The key to a well-run tournament is having enough judges and graders so that everything moves efficiently. Please ensure you bring your judges and they are aware of the times they are expected to be somewhere. At check in, we will tell you the locations of judging/grading rooms for each event. 

• Ready Writing will be limited to 2 students per school. (Email to see if more than 2 is possible. sschreiner@dentonisd.org) Event will be hand written. Computers may not be used. Contestants must bring paper and pen (no pencil).  

• Journalism events will be on computers. Printer will be provided.

• Computer Science - Students will compete individually for individual awards. Schools with at least three entries will compete for the team awards using their best three scores from the individual competition. No calculators will be allowed. Written test only.

• Current Events - No team may have more than four members.  Schools may enter up to two teams.

• Spelling, Accounting, and each Journalism event will be limited to 4 students per school.

• The Spelling contest will be administered online via ASW Spelling Programs. We will provide a computer lab for the contest. Please have students bring wired earbuds/headphones to connect to the desktop (bluetooth will not work). We will have a *limited* number of earbuds/headphones available in case a student forgets, but it will be first come, first served. 

• Coaches are expected to help grade the literary contests (except Ready Writing).  There will be experienced people in charge of each event.  

• Contests may be closed when maximum capacity is reached in a contest room. Please have entry numbers as close to the actual number of entries as possible.

Payment must be made on or before the day of the event. No refunds will be issued. 

Awards

The following awards will be given:  

• One medal to each of the top three individuals in each event.

•One ribbon to each of the 4th-6th place individuals in each event. 

• One individual medal to the high scorer in the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics sections of the Science contest.

• One trophy/plaque to the top Accounting, Calculator, Mathematics, Computer Science, Current Issues & Events,     

         Literary Criticism, Number Sense, Science, and Spelling teams. 

• One plaque for the top Journalism team.

Hospitality
The hospitality room will be in room 112. We’ll have grab and go breakfast and lunch for all coaches and graders. 

Food for students
There will not be food provided for students who attend. Schools are welcome to bring their own snacks for their students. Vending machines are available.

Tab Room:

Tab will be in the conference room across from the main office (located in the main hallway, on the right side (from the main entrance) before you get to the Commons/Cafeteria)  if you have any questions or concerns throughout the day. 

Rules: UIL rules will apply. Coaches are responsible for checking their own students' papers after they have been graded to confirm correct scores.  After the awards ceremony begins, no changes will be made because of incorrect scoring or keys.
