Homework FAQs
How often is homework assigned?
Math Homework - Homework will be assigned weekly and due every Friday. The homework can be completed at your own pace throughout the week depending on your family schedule. Mrs. Burford will check take home folders for completed homework during class on Friday.
Reading Homework - Monthly reading logs will be sent home in your student's take home folder. I will complete folder checks every Friday. The expectation is that your child is reading at least 4 nights a week for 20 minutes. This includes the weekends so do your best to make this work around sports, extracurriculars, and family time. Encourage your student to read anything that interests them; this may look like reading to a younger sibling, magazines, articles, recipes (and hopefully help cook), or traditional books. Don't stress about their reading levels at home! They will get plenty of on or above level practice during the school day. We want reading at home to be fun, light, and enjoyable to build an appreciation for the skill.
There will be small monthly incentives for students who complete a minimum of 4 days of reading a week!Â
How much time should my child spend working on homework?
In 3rd grade, it is encouraged for students to be working on homework for no more than 30 minutes a night (that is math and reading combined). This should be approximately 20 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of math. However, family time and other activities are important too. Make sure you are adjusting this based on the needs of your family and your quality time together!
Are there consequences for late/missing homework?
Missing homework - We will provide an extra copy and expect the student to complete the homework by the original due date unless there was an emergency or an absence.
Late homework - We will expect the student to work on the homework when they arrive in class each morning or during Success Time until it is completed.
Can i help my child complete their homework?
Yes! I always encourage the students to advocate for themselves and ask for help when they get stuck. However, I understand that teaching has changed since we were kids and you may not know how to help. Please reach out if you were unable to help them. We can work with the students if they bring the homework to school the next day.
What will homework cover?
Homework will always be directly related to what we did in class that day/week. Typically, it will be easier than in class assignments to encourage more independence at home and help build confidence!
What if the homework is too easy or too hard?
Homework may seem like it is not the right level for your student. This is okay! The idea is that students are learning to expand their learning beyond the school setting and have the opportunity to develop independence. I will adjust the difficulty level of homework if they are showing a need in class.
