**Families are welcome to walk their children to the classroom the first 3 days of school. After that, please drop your child off at the front or back entrance, and a staff member will make sure he or she gets to the correct classroom.
We will go outside for recess every day unless the weather isn't safe for outdoor play ( wet/muddy/rainy, below 32 degrees or above 104 degrees). When the weather isn't safe for playing outside, we will have indoor recess. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather each day. Please label all clothing items.
Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch monitors and support staff are present to help as needed. Parents are welcome to join their children for lunch. We kindly ask that you give us a couple of weeks before having lunch with your child so that all procedures and routines are set.
Students can purchase lunch from cafeteria or bring lunch from home. If your child will buy lunch you may visit the Child Nutrition website to create and manage your child's SchoolCafe lunch account. You can find lunch menus, prices, apply for free/reduced lunch and a lot more information.
If your child brings a lunch from home, please label their lunch box and all containers. It is important that you explain to your child what's to be eaten for lunch and what's for snack (to eat later in the day in the classroom). Have your child practice opening and closing food containers.
Students will go to Essential Areas every day for 50 minutes. They will rotate between PE (2x/week), Art, Music and Library.
Library - Students will get to check out a library book once a week. Kindergarten students will not take library books home and will keep them in their book boxes.
Play is an important part of child development. At the end of the day, students will have time to play at developmentally appropriate social centers.
Our counselor, Mrs. Ayala, will teach a guidance lesson each week to kindergarten classes. Students will learn social emotional skills such as: self control, mindfulness, empathy, coping strategies, and social skills.
Dismissal is at 3:00pm
Car riders - front/back pick up, students wait inside the building until their number is called for pick up. Anyone picking up as a car rider mus have car tag number hanging from rearview mirror and visible to teachers loading kids into cars. If a person does not have car tag, they will need to park, go into front office, and show a valid ID before the child will be released to them. Parents, if you get out of your car to pick up your child, please park and come inside to check your student out.
Walkers - will exit out the end of 4th/5th grade hallway or out the exterior doors by the Art room. Walkers will not be dismissed from any other door.
Bus - bus riders will be walked to the bus loop after school. They will wait in lines by bus # with other students with the same bus number until the bus arrives.
Day care - daycare students will load by 2nd/3rd grade hallway in lines with other students who go to the same daycare.
ESD - A Kindergarten teacher or ESD staff will walk students to the gym. For more information visit the ESD website.
**Any changes in dismissal should be made to the teacher or front office by 2:00pm**
School hours are 7:40-3:00 each day.
If your child is unable to attend school due to medical reasons, a doctor note is always preferred. Doctor's notes and parent notes must be submitted online here within 72 hours.
If you need to check your child out of school early, please try to let your child's teacher know. Early pick ups are recorded as "loss of instructional time" for attendance purposes, so please try to limit early picks up when possible.
Each student will be given an ID card. Students must have their ID cards to ride the bus to and from school. IDs are also needed when getting food from cafeteria and for checking out library books. In order to prevent ID lost cards, Kindergarten students will keep their cards at school unless they are bus riders.
If your child becomes ill, please make sure he/she is fever free without the use of fever-reducing medications and has not vomited for 24 hours before sending them back to school.
If you have any health-related questions, reach out to our school nurse, April Vincik, avincik@dentonisd.org or 940-369-4405
Teachers will communicate information to families via email or notes sent home in daily folders. We will also send monthly newsletters with upcoming dates and learning overviews.
We will write notes in your child's daily folder when we need to share information with you about your child's day.
There is not a designated Parent-Teacher conference day, teachers will reach out to you if a conference is needed. Parents are welcome to schedule a conference with their child's teacher, please reach out to set up an appointment. Conferences can be in person, by phone or Zoom.
Our principal will send out a weekly newsletter s'more via email, please make sure your most up to date email is on file.
We have four nine week grading periods. You will be able to view your child's report card online through HAC (home access center). Denton ISD uses a standards based grading system. In Kindergarten, 3=meets standard (I can do it on my own) , 2=developing (I can do it with support), 1=beginning( I am unable to do it at this time). The report card also has a section for behavior and work habits. X=needs improvement, blank=meets standard.
For more information about logging into HAC, click here.
In order to determine students' instructional needs and academic growth, students will be given assessments in literacy and math at the beginning, middle and end of the year. Teachers will send home the results of these assessments at the end of the testing windows.
Students should wear clothing that is comfortable to learn, play, sit and run in. It should be weather appropriate. Classroom temperatures can vary, we recommend keeping a light jacket in backpack just in case. Please make sure your child brings a jacket for recess when it's cold outside.
Accidents happen, children must have a full change of extra clothes in their backpacks all the time. Please be sure to replace soiled or outgrown items when necessary.
Kindergarteners will go to PE twice per week. Tennis shoes are required. Even on the days kids don't go to PE , they will go to recess, so our recommendation is to have your child wear "playground friendly" shoes every day. Please have your child wear shoes they can fasten on their own, such as velcro.
In Kindergarten, children need to be able to use the restroom, including wiping and fastening pants, independently. Our classrooms have a restroom, this is the restroom they will use the most. However, it may be necessary to use the other restrooms (for example if they need to use the restroom while at lunch or essential areas) which have individual stalls with toilets, as well as urinals in the boys' restroom. Please make sure your child is prepared for this. Teachers will not be able to help with toilet duties. However, if a child has an accident or needs help, our nurse will help them.
Back pack large enough to hold daily folder, change of clothes and lunch/snack.
Healthy snack
Full change of clothes
Daily folder
Water bottle
It is very helpful, and highly recommended, to bring supplies to Meet the Teacher Night. Don't worry about labeling all supplies as many will be shared. Your child's teacher may give you instructions to label specific items, such as pencil-crayon boxes.
We love celebrating birthdays! Families may send in store bought treats for the class to enjoy on their child's birthday. Please communicate with your child's teacher ahead of time in order to prepare for the day.
There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
If you're interested in volunteering you must complete a volunteer application and background check . Even if you've done this in the past, it must be done every year. Please complete as soon as possible because it can take a few days to weeks to get processed.
Another great way to be involved is to join our amazing PTA. Please visit the PTA Facebook page for more information and how to join.
Feel free to reach out to any kindergarten teacher, we are happy to help!
We look forward to seeing you and your kindergartner in August!!
