Fall 2025: DentonISD has discontinued 5th Grade Orchestra Programs. If you are interested in finding resources for your child to start a stringed instrument, please email Mrs. Hanlon.
General Information:
You would be surprised how far beginning string students can come in one year! Playing a string instrument is something that must be started early, when children's brains are still growing, stretching, and developing. Learning an instrument is wonderful for their development, teaching them everything from a love for the fine arts to goal-setting and discipline: characteristics required for success in any field.
This website has videos, links, and resources for students and parents wanting to learn more about orchestra, instrument rental, etc.
The McNair Orchestra meets every Tuesday, Thursday, and every other Friday during their 5th grade specials time.
Orchestra is open to any 5th grader who is interested in learning how to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students who have prior experience are also welcomed and will be taught according to their skill level. Students will need to rent an instrument and purchase a book for use in this class as well as a few supplies.
If you/your student qualify for Free/Reduced lunch, please contact the director about certain assistance you may receive in obtaining an instrument. (this option is only available for violin, viola, or cello.)
My son/daughter has never played an instrument. Can they still join?
We start at the very beginning, so no musical training is required! Students will need to have the ability to focus, practice at home, and good conduct is a must! The Orchestra program in Denton is one of the best in the state. Every elementary school, middle school, and high school in Denton has Orchestra class.
Sizing Video by Dallas Strings. Students usually rent at this age because they are not yet in full sized instruments and sometimes because their parents would like to see how much interest they have before investing in an instrument. I strongly encourage parents to set up rental ASAP so you are sure to have an instrument delivered in the Fall!
