Special Olympics

Denton ISD Special Olympics

Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment -- on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential. Through sports, we showcase the skills and dignity of our athletes. We also bring together communities to see and take part in the transformative power of sports. We know the odds our athletes must overcome and the barriers they face every single day. We see this at training events and competitions as our athletes push to beat their personal bests -- and exceed them. We believe in a world where there are millions of different abilities but not disabilities. ~via specialolympics.org website.

Denton ISD offers the opportunity for students to participate in the sports of bowling, basketball and track and field through the Special Olympics Texas program. We work hard, play hard, and win with confidence and humility. Each campus within the district has the option of creating a team to participate in each sport, and it is a voluntary position for someone from each campus to take on the role as coach.

**All Special Olympic meets are not a requirement for students to attend. All students are participating on a voluntary basis. If your family already has plans for one of these weekends, please do not feel obligated to attend. Additionally, campus AVLS class staff is acting on a purely voluntary basis, and coaching is not a requirement by the district. Please keep in mind that if AVLS staff cannot attend a meet for some reason, then our campus team cannot participate in a meet. Should this situation arise, we will let you know with plenty advance notice. Thank you for your understanding!
