Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Mre. Fields, and I am excited to welcome your student to 7th Grade English and Reading this school year at Cheek Middle School. The purpose of this letter is to share with you the instructional plan for our course, including what your student will learn, how the course is structured, and how their learning will be assessed throughout the year.
The ELA 7 course addresses the interconnected nature of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through the seven integrated strands of developing and sustaining foundational language skills; comprehension; response; multiple genres; author's purpose and craft; composition; and inquiry and research. Focus areas in this course include the study of characterization through author study, writing realistic fiction, the art of argument, historical fiction, and writing about reading.
Students will demonstrate their learning through a variety of assessments, including daily assignments, journals, quizzes, projects, writing pieces, and unit tests. You can expect:
Minor Assessments (quizzes, short responses, classwork): at least 2 per week
Major Unit Assessments will take place in the months of September, October, November,December,February, March, April and May. This includes mid-unit assessments and quarterly assessments.
IXL Diagnostics: Fall(August), Winter(December), Spring(May)
STAAR Reading: April 7–17 (exact date will be shared once released)
More detailed information will be provided to students in class and updated regularly in Canvas throughout the semester.
