Summer is almost here! During summer, you might look forward to sunny weather and vacation time. However, this is also the time of year to avoid the "summer slide." Summer slide is a common term for the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer break. Though not as pronounced for younger children, we still want to avoid any loss of learning that could occur while your child is not in school. One of the ways to avoid the losing any learning is to continue to read together daily.
Here are some tips for making summer reading fun:
Continue with your reading routines or rituals even though it's summer. Encourage a love of reading by making it a part of the everyday fun of summer! Change it up by listening to audiobooks during your summer road trips. Or combine playing and reading by bringing books on a picnic.
Find what motivates your child to read. Participate in fun summer reading programs that might combine reading and fun activities. The public library usually has some fun activities during the summer. Try offering different forms of literacy besides a traditional book, such as magazines or comic books. Even though your child may not be reading chapter books, they might enjoy listening to a chapter book being read aloud to them by an older sibling or family member.
Let them choose. Children, no matter their age, are more likely to read (or listen to a book) if they're allowed to choose what they want to read. Let your child choose books based on their interests, including books with their favorite movie or TV characters or about their favorite sport or animals.
Check out our Denton ISD Elementary summer reading website! Here you will find many opportunities to keep reading this summer, but why is it so important? Research shows that students who read during the summer GAIN reading skills, while those who don't tend to slide BACKWARDS. Be prepared for next school year by READING EVERYDAY!
