Remember to continue to read to your child. By doing this you are increasing their listening and speaking vocabulary and preparing them to read progressively more challenging books. Consider reading a chapter book to your child that you can return to each night for a chapter or two. Keeping a book on CD in the car for trips is another way to improve vocabulary. It also makes the trip go so much faster.
