Service Projects

Members must complete a total of 15 service hours of service hours each semester as per the Comal ISD NHS By-Laws. Two (2) hours must be completed through NHS Sponsored Projects listed below. The remaining thirteen (13) hours are to be completed through individual projects.

NHS Sponsored Projects

Highway Clean Up

All NHS members are required to participate in one (1) highway clean up event each semester.

Two (2) highway clean up events will be held each semester on Saturday mornings (8:30 am to 9:30 am) starting in the SVHS parking lot.

Lunch Time Clean Up

All NHS members are required to complete a Lunch Time Clean Up every month for a total of 4 hours a semester. An hour requires assisting in cleaning up the cafeteria / senior dining hall for six (6) different days during the month; a verification log must be completed and turned in at monthly chapter meetings.

School Assistance Project

SAP is a project that connects NHS members with SVHS teachers who need help in their classrooms with various projects. Teachers post "jobs" through our NHS Signup.com account and all members have the opportunity to sign up and help out.

Testing and Calculator Set Up

Members can earn service hours by assisting the testing coordinator, Mr. Saberian, and SVHS teacher in preparing their classrooms for testing. Dates for Testing Set Up will be announced throughout the year. Sign up for each event is required.

Induction Ceremony


All members are required to attend the induction ceremony. However, students may earn service hours by helping set up, cleaning up, and participating in the ceremony. Sign up is required.

Relay for Life Volunteering

The SVHS Chapter of NHS has participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in various capacities for the past several years. This year, will have a team participate in the Comal County Relay for Life in the spring (date will be announced) in honor and memory of those within the SVHS family who have been impacted by the ongoing fight with cancer.

Students can earn service hours by assisting the event directors in running activities throughout the night. Sign up is required.

Individual Service Projects

Each member is required to complete ten (10) service hours each semester. These hours can be earned through participating in chapter sponsored events in addition to the 5 required hours, projects sponsored by other SVHS organizations, and / or projects within the community.

Mammen Family Public Library

The Bulverde Library is a non-profit organization ran with the help of volunteers and workers. Members can work during open hours to shelve materials, tidy up the area, and help behind the scenes. Bulverde Animal Humane Society

BAHS is a non-profit, no-kill shelter dedicated to caring for abandoned animals. Volunteers can walk the dogs, play with cats, and help set up for adoption days. Open hours are on Saturday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 11am-1pm. A scheduled orientation made on their website is required before attending. The Loft Coffee House

The Loft Coffee House is a non-profit ministry of Riverside Community Church ran by volunteers. Members can work during open hours cleaning, serving coffee, and helping behind the counter. Chicktime

The Canyon Lake Chapter of Chicktime operates to empower teenage girls who have been removed from their homes due to mental, physical, abuse as a women's shelter. This opportunity is offered to females 12+ only, with the chance to bond, talk, and hang out with the girls who long for a normal life. They meet on the 2nd Saturday of every month at the New Life Children's Center, and do not require any sign up or background checks. Church of Hope

Church of Hope is a religious organization that meets to help those in need. Volunteers help to serve hot meals, clothing, and care packages to the homeless near downtown San Antonio. They meet on the second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of every month, located under IH-10/35 between Cesar E Chavez and El Paso, from 1:30-3:30 pm. No sign up or background check required. Teen Court

New Braunfels Teen Court is an organization that offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for an offense when brought before a jury of their peers. Members can participate in the jury to make suggestions on their "sentence" in community service, specialized classes and jury service and receive experience on the behind the scenes of a judicial process. You must commit to serving the Teen Court at least 3 sessions after submitting a teen volunteer application, and must contact the court in advance to volunteer. New Braunfels Food Bank

New Braunfels Food Bank is a branch facility of the San Antonio Food Bank that works to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education, and advocacy. Members can volunteer throughout their food sorting rooms, client choice pantry, community kitchen, and the garden and farm areas. The program meets several days of the week at specific times, provided on the website's schedule. All volunteers are required to register online to select a preferred volunteer site and shift prior to attending.
