The 09-R1 Scholarship provide an opportunity to cadets who are currently completing their ML I year of ROTC while the 09-R2 Scholarship provide the same opportunity to cadets who are currently completing their ML II or ML III year of ROTC . It allows cadets to commission as an Army officer in either the National Guard or Active Duty.
Those who contract with an 09-R1 or 09-R2 will begin drilling with a National Guard unit one weekend a month and will be paid as an E-5. This scholarship has two primary benefits: the first is that the cadets who participate get the opportunity to experience a particular unit and branch earlier than their classmates. For example, an individual who thinks that they want to be a combat engineer will get the chance to experience how an engineer unit operates and how they enjoy the coinciding lifestyle. The second benefit is the financial compensation. Cadets will be paid for the hours spent drilling.
