If you were to walk the halls of 4th grade, you might hear us chanting, “Area = length x width.” or “Perimeter’s like a picture frame you add up all the sides.” It’s an exciting unit as it is visual and students get to
Students will learn to use formulas to find the area and perimeter of regular and irregular figures.
Area: A = L x W
Perimeter: P = 2L x 2W OR P = L + W + L + W
It is helpful to use the words area and perimeter at home in conversations. This allows for students to sort in their brains the difference between area and perimeter. “Let’s walk the perimeter of the ________.” or “We vacuum the area of the room.” Putting it in everyday conversations is key to full understanding of the math vocabulary terms.

We are currently studying fractions and your mathematicians are quickly becoming experts. They use their vocabulary when sharing in class and impress us daily! In the fractions unit, we are modeling, comparing fractions to other fractions, finding equivalent fractions, relating fractions to decimals, and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. They are rocking this unit and we can't wait to move on to the next unit - measurement.
