Lines and Lettering in Engineering Drawing
Lines and Lettering in Engineering Drawing are fundamental elements used to convey technical information clearly and precisely. Different types of lines, such as construction, hidden, and dimension lines, help represent shapes, dimensions, and features of objects. Proper lettering ensures readability and consistency in engineering drawings, following standard conventions like ISO and ASME.
Drawing skills enable the representation of objects on paper with precise dimensions.
Small objects, like a mobile phone, can be drawn in a full-size (1:1) scale.
Large objects (e.g., Eiffel Tower) or microscopic objects require scaling (scaling up or down).
Representative Factor (RF):
RF > 1 → Enlarged drawing
RF < 1 → Reduced drawing
Proper layout is essential for engineering drawings.
Key elements:
Margins
Borders
Title blocks
Lettering for labels, notes, and dimensions
Lettering is used for writing instructions, labels, and dimensions.
Must be clear and readable for accuracy in technical communication.
Visible lines: Thick, continuous lines for object outlines.
Hidden lines: Medium-thick, dashed lines for invisible edges.
Center lines: Thin lines with alternating long dashes and dots for symmetry.
Dimension lines: Used to indicate measurements.
Extension lines: Extend from the object to show where dimensions apply.
Cutting plane lines: Indicate sectional views.
Dimensioning ensures precise representation of object sizes.
Types of dimensioning:
Horizontal & Vertical
Aligned
Chain (Continuous)
Parallel
Diameter (for circles)
Radius (for arcs)
Angular (for angles)
