The empathy interview is the most important stage of the Design Thinking (DT) process. The empathy interview helps the designer to understand who they are designing for, and why. The goal of this work was to empower fifth graders to design games to help users learn about the concept of Self Awareness. Before fifth graders were introduced to the whole process of DT, they engaged in empathy interviews with a partner in class. Students were challenged with creating the perfect ice cream sundae for their partner. Fifth graders used the idea of designing a sundae because most people, even children, have an emotional connection to food. Food can focus around a social event, including time spent with family or friends. There is often a personal connection an interviewer can get to when talking to people about food. The goal for students was to understand the questions that can be asked to get to something beyond the surface, and then take that information to design something that is at the heart of what the user needs (or in the case of a sundae, something the user enjoys).
