What is the ACL and what are the stats behind the injury and probabilty of returning to normal athletic performance
The ACL is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, and its purpose is to connect the femur and tibia, prevent any excess forward movement of the tibia, and provide rotational stability.
Up to 50% of people don't return to the same sport
Up to 70% in contact sports don't return to the same sport
Of people who did return, up to 21% had functional limitations leading to a decrease in performance
In the NBA, 22% didn't return, and 44% who did had a decrease in performance
Up to 80% of running backs and receivers in the NFL returned, but performance decreased by 1/3
There is an ACL reinjury rate after RTS upwards of 40%
