Science Olympiad is a team-based STEM competition that challenges students to explore a wide range of science and engineering topics. Students prepare for multiple events that may involve laboratory investigations, scientific knowledge, data analysis, engineering design, building, and problem-solving.
At Hopkins, Science Olympiad students work together to become experts in their assigned events. They research, experiment, construct, test, redesign, and practice throughout the season before competing against teams from other schools.
What students gain: Scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, engineering design, teamwork, time management, research skills, and the ability to apply classroom science to challenging problems.
Great for students who: Love science, enjoy building or experimenting, want to explore specialized STEM topics, or enjoy working toward a team goal.
HOPKINS WORKING BUDGET :
• Hopkins SciOly Teams member fees will be managed by our PFA member, the Hopkins SciOly FINANCIAL OFFICER, Mrs. Deepika Srinivas. Students who pass the tryouts and are assigned a team need to use the STEAM_QR Code. You may also write a formal check addressed to Hopkins_PFA (STEAM) dropped it off at the Hopkins Office. Remember to include your student's STEAM Program you are donating for on the check. The SciOly requests a $100 registration fee that will be needed for the following:
• Registration and invitational events: $150–$350 per team placeholder until official fees are posted
• Laboratory, build, safety, and consumable materials: (Teams future planning)
• Team shirts or Sweatshirts: approximately $15–$30 per student
In-person furniture: SciOly _Hopkins Canopies (2-3), tables (TBD), and banners. (whole club future planning)
• Transportation and meals: After # of events and locations are confirmed (whole club future planning)

Please obtain the coordinator's approval before buying or building materials and registering for an event. Track planned versus actual expenses, funding sources, approvals, and receipts.

To support the STEAM program, you may donate by scanning the QR code provided or by submitting a check payable to Hopkins_PFA (STEAM) to the Hopkins Middle School office.

2026–2027 SEASON • DIVISION B • GRADES 6–8

CURRENT SEASON
The official 2027 Division B event slate is published. The 2027 rules PDFs are scheduled for release Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Central. Until then, students may study official event pages, but must not rely on an older rulebook for device dimensions, permitted resources, scoring, or safety requirements.
The Alameda County Regional and Northern California State dates have not yet been posted. NorCal team registration normally opens the Tuesday after Labor Day and closes December 2 at 11:59 p.m. or when a regional fills. The 2027 National Tournament is May 14–15, 2027 at The Ohio State University for qualifying state champions.

WHAT STUDENTS MUST DO
• Study the official rules for every assigned event as soon as the 2027 PDF is released.
• Check official Rules Corrections, Rules Clarifications, FAQs, score sheets, and event pages throughout the season.
• Keep an event binder or allowed notes exactly as described in the rules.
• For build events, maintain a design log with dated sketches, measurements, tests, failures, changes, and final specifications.
• For laboratory events, practice safe procedures, data collection, calculations, and cleanup.
• Practice with the assigned partner under the official time limit.
• Attend team meetings, mock tournaments, device inspections, and scheduled invitationals.
PARENT AND COACH GUIDELINES
Parents may help with transportation, materials, scheduling, supervision, and finding subject-matter mentors. Students must perform the event work, testing, notes, and competition tasks themselves. Before purchasing materials, confirm the current rules and obtain coach approval. Build-event devices should be transported in protective containers.
SUCCESSFUL TEAM HABITS
A successful team assigns events early, creates weekly study and build goals, shares resources, tests repeatedly, records data, teaches concepts to teammates, and follows the spirit and letter of the rules. Reliability matters: a prepared student who communicates and attends consistently strengthens the entire 15-student tournament team.
