Future Problem Solving encourages students to examine complex challenges that could affect our world in the future. Teams investigate a topic, identify important problems, develop possible solutions, and think critically about the consequences of different choices.
Students learn to look beyond the obvious answer. They consider multiple perspectives, evaluate evidence, anticipate future consequences, and develop innovative solutions to challenging situations.
What students gain: Critical thinking, creative thinking, research, problem-solving, communication, decision-making, and the ability to analyze complex situations.
Great for students who: Ask “What if?”, enjoy discussing big ideas, like solving challenging problems, or are interested in the future of society, science, and technology.
Students work under time pressure using the six-step process.
Competition process
Students research the annual topics before competition. During a competition problem, students receive a future scene and have approximately two hours to complete the six-step process. Students must quickly:
Analyze → Brainstorm → Identify the key problem → Generate solutions → Evaluate solutions → Create an action plan
Students research, plan, implement, document, and evaluate a real project.
Instead of solving a fictional future scenario, students identify a real problem in an actual community and take action to address it.
The process
1. Identify an Area of Concern
What problem exists in the community?
2. Identify Challenges
What specific problems are connected to that issue?
3. Identify the Underlying Problem
Which part of the problem can the students realistically address?
4. Generate Solutions
What could actually improve the situation?
5. Develop Criteria
How will the students determine which solution is best?
6. Develop an Action Plan
What will students actually do?
Individual futuristic fiction.
Creative Writing is an individual competition, not a team problem-solving event.
Students choose one of the year's FPS topics and create an original futuristic short story. The story must:
Be original
Relate to one of the annual topics
Be set at least 20 years in the future
Be 1,500 words or fewer for the regular competition
Individual oral performance.Storytelling is essentially the oral-performance counterpart to Creative Writing.
Students develop a futuristic story based on one of the annual FPS topics and tell the story rather than submitting a written story. The student creates an original story that:
Relates to an annual FPS topic
Predicts a future situation
Is set approximately 20–30 years in the future
Is presented as a live five-minute performance
A three-week introductory problem-solving experience. There is also a newer, more flexible FPS option called Challenges. This is particularly interesting for Hopkins because it can serve as an entry point for students who have never participated in Future Problem Solving before. Format. Unlike the traditional Global Issues competition, Challenges are:

Asynchronous
Shorter
Completed during a three-week window
Students work through the six-step process and submit their Step 6 Action Plan. (Future Problem Solving)

Only the Action Plan is judged in the Challenge competition.

Use library and school research resources first. Approve registration and travel before payment. Track every expense, funding source, approval, and receipt in the team planner.

CURRENT TOPICS
• Practice Problem 1 — Digital Dark Age: How should society prioritize data to preserve and reduce the effects of future information loss?
• Practice Problem 2 — Disappearing Cultures: How might the loss of endangered cultures affect individuals and communities?
• Qualifying Problem — Influencer Marketing: How might influencer marketing change as businesses balance credibility and profit?
• Affiliate Finals — Health Security: How might health-security efforts prevent, prepare for, and reduce the impact of public-health crises?
• World Finals topic — announced March 1, 2027.
DIVISIONS AND ADVANCEMENT
Global Issues has Junior (grades 4–6), Middle (grades 7–9), and Senior (grades 10–12) divisions. A student may compete in a higher division, but not a lower one, so Hopkins will confirm the appropriate division for mixed-grade teams. Students may compete as teams or individuals; Hopkins normally forms four-student teams. California’s detailed 2026–2027 qualifying and State Bowl dates should be taken only from the California affiliate’s current Key Dates page when posted.
The 2027 International Conference/World Finals is June 9–13, 2027. Affiliate champions are invited to compete in person; the official World Finals problem topic will be announced March 1, 2027.
THE SIX-STEP PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCESS
1. Identify challenges in the Future Scene.
2. Select and write a focused underlying problem.
3. Generate many possible solution ideas.
4. Create criteria for judging the solutions.
5. Evaluate and rank the solutions using the criteria.
6. Develop a detailed action plan for the best solution.
Students must alternate between creative thinking—producing many original possibilities—and critical thinking—testing relevance, impact, feasibility, and future orientation.
WHAT STUDENTS MUST DO
• Research each topic using credible, varied, current sources and maintain an annotated research file.
• Learn topic vocabulary, trends, stakeholders, systems, benefits, risks, and ethical questions.
• Practice writing clear challenges with cause, effect, and future relevance.
• Generate fluent, flexible, original solutions before judging ideas.
• Use precise criteria and defend scoring decisions.
• Write a specific action plan explaining who, what, why, how, where, and when.
• Complete qualifying work under official timed and independent conditions.
• Prepare an Action Plan Presentation if the team advances.
PARENT AND COACH GUIDELINES
Parents may help students locate credible information, organize schedules, and practice communication. Coaches may teach the process and provide feedback during practice. During official competitive work, students must follow the published rules for time, materials, collaboration, and adult assistance.
WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL TEAM
High-performing teams research before solving, assign process roles, include every member’s ideas, monitor time, write legibly and specifically, connect every response to the Future Scene, and use evaluator feedback to improve the next booklet.
