A Career Literacy Committee, composed of teachers, administrators, program specialists, and other interested parties, was created to explore the possibility of extending career literacy into elementary and middle school. The committee identified the knowledge and skills necessary for career awareness and career exploration in K-8.

Work-Based Learning includes strategies that allow schools to go beyond the classroom and into the community to develop student competencies. The activities allow students to apply classroom theories and explore career options at the work site, as well as connect classroom learning to work. Work-based learning is not a class. It is a method of instruction that enhances a related class in which a student is currently or has been enrolled in.
