How can I use this resource with students?
The Career Exploration Series is intended and designed to be used with a wide degree of flexibility that allows for educator creativity, customization to a variety of educational settings, and student interaction / reflection. Some video interviews may be interactive during the live recording, and some have graphic organizers available for student use. Videos and other resources provided on this site can be used as facilitated in-class elements, as out-of-class assignments, or simply encouraged as resources accessible to students and their families on an informal 24/7 basis.
Some Selected Ideas for Use:
· Employ one of the video interviews to help students connect your current unit/lesson to real world application and relevance.
· Give students a goal or specific “look fors” in the interview related to your content area or current unit/lesson, then facilitate some form of discussion afterward.
· Provide (or lead students in creating) a graphic organizer prior to watching the interview, and have them use it afterward to complete a reflective discussion/writing activity.
· Use an interview to teach students how to apply “non-content” skills such as sourcing, fact checking, etc. and/or as a component of a research or presentation assignment.
· Engage students in compiling a library of similar sources that provide connections between the current unit/lesson and various aspects of the real world.
· Engage students in pre– and post-viewing activities (e.g. “What questions do you have about this XYZ before we view it?” “What questions do you have now, that you didn’t have before watching the interview? How can you get answers to those questions?”)
· Have students conduct a similar interview with a family member to learn more about what they do, and then have them complete a connect-the-dots assignment with the topics in your content area.
