INSTRUCTIONS/TASK:
Considering our social justice standards for this unit (diversity and justice), you will research an event, trend, phenomenon, or term you deeply love, want to learn more about, or know left a deep mark on the world, and then write a two-part response. One part will be an informative summary of your topic & research, synthesizing together at least two different sources, presenting the most relevant and recent data on the topic and offering a digestible informational blurb about your topic. The other part will be a personal reflection regarding your interest in the topic, presented as a preface to your summary, similar to the prologues in the memoir.
MAIN PROMPT: What’s a historical event, popular trend, cultural phenomenon, pop culture thing (movie, music, series, game, etc.), or global/social movement that you deeply love, left a big mark on the world, or want to learn more about? Select a topic to research.
SELECT: What’s a historical event, popular trend, cultural phenomenon, pop culture thing (movie, music, series, game, etc.), or global/social movement that you deeply love, left a big mark on the world, or want to learn more about? Select a topic to research.
EXPLORE: Find appropriate credible sources (think databases, google scholar, CHS Library Homepage, or published news sources/magazines). You will need at least two credible sources.
CONNECT: Consider what information from your research is most relevant and recent to your selected topic. Think about what you already know about this topic, and what more you need to find out. See if you can find answers to these questions:
What is it? Provide important and relevant information.
Why do you think it is (or was) so important, monumental, popular or widespread?
How did it impact individuals, communities, or the world?
What was so significant about this thing?
SYNTHESIZE: Keeping Noah’s informational prologues in mind, write a synthesized summary of the information you researched. This summary should be between 500-1000 words and should be in your own words. Choose a voice & style to best deliver this information (this can be formal or informal).
REFLECT: Write a preface to your summary that includes the following: 1) why you are interested in the topic, 2) how you thought about the researching process, what worked (or didn’t work) in exploring the topic, and 3) what you would like to learn more about. This preface should be between 250 - 500 words.
