What is MAP?

NWEA/MAP is an adaptive assessment (Math and English) and used primarily as an interim formative assessment. Two key purposes of MAP are to help identify students’ instructional levels and to measure growth over time.

  • Skills-based, not standards-based

  • The goal is to find the level of questions when students are correct about 50% of the time (ZPD - zone of proximal development)

  • Finds the student’s instructional level not their mastery/proficiency level

  • Measured using the RIT Scale

      • RIT Scale - Rasch Unit Theory - overall performance by subject area measures growth over time

      • RIT Scale (~150 - 250)

      • Equal interval, Grade-level independent
