Homework Expectations:

Reading: Students are expected to read for 30 minutes every night. At the beginning of the year, we will require 15 minutes, but if your child can sit and read for 30 minutes, please document it on the provided log. Please write only ONE title of the books read during a 15 minute time frame. There is no need to write additional titles. Books that can be read include 100 Book Challenge books on your child's color level, leveled readers sent home weekly that can be ready daily to improve fluency, and books from home. Therefore, if your child reads for 15 minutes, you will write ONE title on ONE line. If your child reads for 30 minutes, you will write ONE title each on TWO lines on the log. We track minutes read, not the amount of books read. The students will be motivated with a classroom chart that will be filled in as they read at home and in the classroom. Students earn prizes for every 100 LINES read and will have their current book folder swapped out for a new color folder.

Spelling: Students will have biweekly fingerspelling and sign production assessments. Please study the words provided every night for fluency and recall.

Vocabulary: Students will have weekly vocabulary assessments that coincide with our reading unit story. Please study the words nightly with your child to prepare for the assessment. By practicing at home and at school, students are internalizing the content, rather than studying for a test and forgetting the information later. We want them to learn and succeed, not just memorize for a test.
