Committee Work

Professional Development Committee Recommendations 2020-21

Provide professional development that supports anti-racism and equity practices throughout the Frontier Regional and Union #38 school districts. Early topics to include: self-reflection, difficult conversations and tools to address racism and discrimination. Ensure all members of the school community have access to antiracism professional development including faculty, administrators, coaches and staff in supporting roles.

Support self-reflective practices in order to inform and transform curriculum, school cultures in, and behaviors to embody antiracist and anti bias practices within the community. This work will require collaborating with both outside experts as well as pre-existing committees within our school communities.

We made a set of antiracism and equity professional development recommendations for 2020-2021 with the understanding that this is ongoing work, which requires documenting and evaluating our progress and creating new goals every year.

Cultural Assessment

Undertake a cultural assessment to identify why/where/how oppressive/hate speech and actions occur in our schools and find where there is space and opportunity for dismantling cultural oppression.

Secondary Peer Listening Circles

The FRS Peer Educator Group will lead a series of anti-hate speech listening circles at all five FRS/Union #38schools. Workshops will include vocabulary, Q&A, and other themes. We will expand the Peer Educator Group in order to make sure undue pressure does not fall on a small group of students.

Feedback Forms

Establish a system to collect feedback from current students and recent alumni about their personal experiences of racism and/or systemic oppression in our schools. Use these stories to further inform our target areas and help school and community members understand why this work is necessary.

Norms

Establish new norms or review existing norms for each school with student input. These norms should reflect how students want their school community to be and provide guidance for addressing instances of hate speech, racism, or other forms of discrimination.

Pop Culture Education - Why the N word is  No word for FRS students

Initiate the first student-led public awareness campaign centered on ending the use of the N-word at the middle/high school level. Part of this campaign will involve filmed PSA’s, a school or community wide-screening and discussion, and breakout sessions in English, History, and Health classes.

School Mascot

Eliminate any use or reemergence of Native American imagery in the Frontier logo, provide education about why this is important. A contest was held by Frontier students to design a new Redhawk logo to be launched this spring.

School Mascot Development Process

Policy Review

Review policy and procedure with respect to incidents involving discrimination and bias in order to adopt restorative/transformative  justice practices.

Handbook Review

Look at language in each school’s handbook w/consistent approach in using restorative justice for racial/anti-equity slurs. Students should be involved in the creation of this new language and Honor Code.

District Consultant

Identify a district-wide position that actively promotes racial equity by teaching classes about race and racism as well as responding to incidents of bias and discrimination.
