At the heart of the Responsive Classroom approach lies a core belief: In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies — cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control—and a set of academic competencies — academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors.
MORNING MEETING
Each morning, our class starts the day with a Responsive Classroom Morning Meeting, a welcoming and inclusive routine designed to build community, strengthen social skills, and set a positive tone for the day. Morning Meeting includes four key parts: a greeting to welcome each student, a sharing time for students to practice listening and empathy, a group activity to foster cooperation and fun, and a morning message to introduce the day’s learning. This daily practice helps students feel connected, respected, and ready to learn!
