In order to students and teachers to locate the baseline of the student skills, pre-tests based on the Colorado Academic Standards evidence outcomes for reading, pre-tests were created. These pre-tests gave students and teachers a guide to what they needed to work on through out the year.

As a 7th grade team, the standards used for evidence outcomes in the state standards were rewritten and grouped in order for students to easily access and work with them. These are the newly-revised and modified standards and essential skills for 7th grade English Language Arts students. The original number for the evidence outcomes remains next to the standard itself.
With the Standard Tracking Sheet, students use these essential skills to track their progress throughout the year.

Throughout the year, students will compile their work, their thinking, and their progress in a website. The sample website link illustrates the base for what all students will have in their portfolio.

The goal through this focus is a focus on themselves - How have they changed? How have they grown? How have they progressed? Students, rather than teachers, are the ones leading the charge and answering those questions. Build leaders by giving them power of themselves first.

With each unit, the focus is on change--on identity--and how change happens. In leadership, students must develop character and know where that comes from. We start with literature and move to ourselves and the world around us. At the beginning of the year, after working through this setup and mindset change, let students know the final goal: your final is to prove how you have changed throughout this year.
