Advancing Transportation Justice through a Unique Grant Program
At Front and Centered, we are proud to partner with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) as a community grant maker and coordinator. Through this collaboration, we aim to elevate community-led efforts for transportation justice, funded by the Climate Commitment Act. This unique grant opportunity, supported by over $2 million in legislative proviso funding, is designed to advance carbon reduction strategies while fostering deeper community engagement.
Our goal is to support projects that align with carbon-reduction priorities across the state, while also shaping future policy recommendations for WSDOT. We believe this collaboration can lay the groundwork for long-term, equitable transportation solutions by:
“...developing and implementing a community outreach, education, and technical assistance program for overburdened communities and their partners, helping them access funding to create community-centered carbon reduction strategies…”
To shape the design and priorities of this grant program, we held two pre-scoping workshops, both rooted in co-learning and co-design.
Community Workshop: This workshop centered on learning from community voices, allowing participants to define the key priorities for the grant program. Together, we explored what transportation justice means to them and their communities.
WSDOT Workshop: The second workshop brought together WSDOT project team members and community representatives from the first session. This provided an opportunity for WSDOT to build upon community-driven insights and ensure alignment with the broader goals of carbon reduction.
Insights from both workshops have been thoughtfully integrated into the final grant program design. Now, we are ready to support community projects that reflect the shared vision of transportation justice.
