The Transportation Justice Leadership Grants Program is designed to support community-based projects that align with Washington State's transportation goals. These grants are available to nonprofit organizations, community groups, and other eligible entities seeking funding for projects that promote environmental sustainability, equitable transportation, and community well-being.
Below, you will find a step-by-step guide to the application process, including important deadlines, required documents, and a breakdown of what types of projects qualify for funding.
Before applying, make sure your organization and project meet the eligibility criteria. You can quickly verify this by using our Eligibility Checker. Only eligible applicants can proceed with the application process.
Prepare the following documents to include in your application:
Project Proposal: A detailed project description, including objectives, timeline, and projected outcomes.
Budget Outline: A breakdown of anticipated costs, including personnel, materials, and other expenses.
Organization Overview: Information about your organization, including mission, key personnel, and relevant experience.
Letters of Support: If applicable, include letters from partners or community members supporting your project.
Tax Status Verification: Proof of your nonprofit or community group status, e.g. a 501(c)(3) certificate.
All applications must be submitted through the JustFund platform. If you don't already have an account, you can easily create one within the platform. Once logged in, follow these steps:
Complete the online application form, providing all required information.
Upload your project proposal and supporting documents.
Submit your application by the stated deadline.
Tip: Be sure to save your progress in JustFund frequently, as applications can be long and detailed.
Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by our grant committee. You will receive an acknowledgment of your submission right after you have submitted. Final decisions will be communicated within two weeks after the submission deadline.
Applications are now open and will remain open for submission until May 15, 2025. Applicants will submit their project ideas by answering three preliminary questions on the JustFund portal.
Applications will be evaluated bimonthly as part of a continuous review and selection process. Applications submitted by Nov. 30 will be evaluated in the first round of reviews in early December. Later, applicants will then be invited to a virtual interview to present a more detailed project work plan and general budget.
To be considered for funding, your project must fall within the following categories:
Sustainable Transportation: Projects that reduce emissions, encourage active transportation (walking, biking), or improve transit systems.
Community Engagement and Equity: Initiatives focused on increasing transportation access for underserved or marginalized communities.
Environmental Stewardship: Projects that enhance environmental sustainability or mitigate the impacts of transportation on natural resources.
Infrastructure Improvements: Upgrades or repairs to transportation systems that promote safety, accessibility, and efficiency.
If your project doesn't fit neatly into one of these categories but you believe it aligns with WSDOT's broader goals, please contact us for clarification before applying.
