Back To The 4th Grade Home Page

Hi there! I’m Susan Pickrel, and I’ll be your child’s reading and writing teacher in fourth grade this year. Get ready—we’re going to have a great time learning, laughing, and celebrating all the silly national holidays like Talk Like a Pirate Day or National Donut Appreciation Day (because why not?). 😉

I grew up in Watertown, New York, a place that’s as beautiful as it is freezing cold. (Think snow... and then double it.) I’ve been married to my husband, David, for 31 years, and we have four grown children, ages 22 to 29—which means I’ve survived the teenage years four times, and I deserve a medal (or at least some strong coffee).

Last year, I officially became a grandmother, which is hands-down the best gig I’ve ever had. Seriously—tiny hugs, zero discipline responsibilities, and snacks on demand? Sign me up.

As a former military family, we’ve moved more times than I can count—but no matter where we went, Texas always called us back. It’s home.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M–Commerce and my Master’s in Reading and Curriculum from Grand Canyon University. I’ve spent the last 19 years teaching amazing students in Kansas, Arizona, and all over Texas.

When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll find me exercising (usually begrudgingly), traveling, chasing my grandson around, walking my dogs, and reading everything from cereal boxes to novels. If it has words, I’ll read it.

I’m so excited to get to know you and your child this year. We’re going to grow as readers, writers, thinkers—and maybe even party planners for National Pencil Day!

See you soon!
