1. What can I do to help my child at home?
Please check your child's take home folder each night for communications and student work.
Please practice the sight words listed on this website, read every night, or play the games that are being sent home.
(see homework question below).
Try to keep a consistent routine at home including bedtime and morning routines.
Encourage independence or independence with your supervision when it's appropriate-it will increase their confidence!
Have conversations with your kinder about their day and reinforce positive interactions with friends.
2. Does Kindergarten have homework?
Guided reading books are sent home daily in your child's guided reading pocket starting in October. These books should be read every night by your child. We work on these books together at small group time during Reader's Workshop. They need to stay in their binder at all times when they are not busy reading them.
Your child may bring home a game instead of a guided reading book. Have fun playing the game, but please make sure all the pieces get returned to the homework pocket.
The homework folder and pocket needs to be returned to school each day.
3. Can I bring treats for my child's birthday?
We do not encourage bringing toys for the children in your child's class, but small favors, like pencils or stickers are allowed. Food is not permitted to celebrate birthdays. We have many food allergies and diet restrictions among the Kinder kiddos and our main priority is safety and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
4. What if I need to change how my child is getting picked up?
First, call the school office at 469.633.2500 and let them know of the change. The front office can notify the teacher. Then email your child's teacher. Please do not rely on emailing your child's teacher only. Your child's teacher does not always have the ability to check their email for dismissal changes in a timely manner.
5. What can I send for snack?
Snack Time: 1:20 daily
Suggestions: popcorn, pretzels, veggies, fruit, fruit snacks, chips, crackers, water bottle.
Please do not send candy, sugary drinks like soda or kool-aid, yogurt, or anything that requires utensils.
Please send a water bottle every day.
6. What are our bathroom routines?
Kindergarteners will use the restrooms independently. Please practice using zippers, buttons, and cleaning themselves at home to prevent accidents.
They can only be sent out of their classroom one at a time. When one student returns from the restroom, the next child will be allowed to go. Unless there is an emergency, please understand we share the bathrooms in our pod with Pre-K too, and there are only a few stalls in each restroom. This protocol is put in place to minimize loss of instruction and students playing in the bathroom.
7. Why do I need to send extra clothes in my child's backpack?
It's kindergarten, we love to learn by doing, and sometimes accidents happen!
These accidents can consist of bathroom accidents (those zippers and buttons can be tough-practice at home please), spills in the cafe, enthusiastic artists in art class, vomit, mud from the playground etc.
Please label the inside tag of all clothes and jackets (and do not forget to send a pair of shoes too)!
