Art I is an introductory course in which students will learn how to use the elements and principles of art to create a variety of 2D and 3D art. Media explored will include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and fibers. Students will also be introduced to the historical and cultural influences on art, will explore the philosophical nature of art, and students will learn to make critical judgments about art.
This course is designed for students who have one or zero years of middle school art experience.
Advanced Art I is an introductory course in which students will learn how to use the elements and principles of art to create a variety of 2D and 3D art. Students will also be introduced to the historical and cultural influences on art, will explore the philosophical nature of art, and students will learn to make critical judgments about art.
This course is designed specifically to challenge the student that has had 2-3 years of middle school art credit and/or is intending to pursue the more rigorous AP Studio Art classes.
Art II is a year-long course in drawing, design, painting, mixed media and 3D work.
Students build on their knowledge and experience from their high school Art 1 or PreAP Art 1 class. Students explore a variety of techniques and media while working on creative problem solving.
Prerequisite: Art 1
In Advanced Art II, students will develop skills in drawing and color theory application beyond the average Art II student.
Advanced Art II is an honors credit class recommended for students seriously looking at visual art career. It will begin preparing and focusing students on developing skills & techniques used in a future AP portfolio.
Prerequisite: Art I or Advanced Art I
Ceramics addresses the history of working in clay, modeling, molding, casting, carving construction and assemblage.
The Ceramics course will also cover throwing on the wheel, kiln firing, primitive firing, glaze chemistry and surface design. Further, exhibition, portfolio development, and development of a series or collection of ceramic work related to central concept will be a goal.
Prerequisite: Art 1/Advanced Art I
Art III & IV are year-long courses in drawing, design, painting, photography, mixed media and 3D work.
Art III & IV are designed for the student who is interested in exploring the creative process. Experimentation with a variety of non-traditional materials and process is a large part of this course. While it is advanced, it is slower paced than Advanced Placement studio classes.
Prerequisites: Art I/Advanced Art I and Art II/Advanced Art II
Advanced Placement 3D Design is a rigorous college level design portfolio class designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art.
The portfolio requires 12 digital images from a sustained investigation of any topic in which the student is interested.
You can earn college credit if you pass the AP 3D exam (portfolio) in May.
Prerequisite: Art I, Art II and Ceramics are suggested.
Advanced Placement 2D Design is a rigorous college level design portfolio class designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art.
The portfolio requires 15 digital images from a sustained investigation of any topic in which the student is interested. You will also submit 5 physical artworks demonstrating skill/technique.
You can earn college credit if you pass the AP 2D exam (portfolio) in May.
AP Art History is a challenging, college-level survey class, exploring art and architecture from the past 30,000 years. We cover Western art movements from prehistory through the Classical Era, the Renaissance up to Contemporary art. There are also units on the arts of West, Central and East Asia, Africa, the Pacific and Indigenous America.
Open to any RHS student, no prerequisite. Suggested for sophomores through seniors. Fine Art Credit.
Advanced Placement Studio Art is a rigorous college level drawing portfolio class designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art.
The portfolio requires 15 digital images from a sustained investigation of any topic in which the student is interested. You will also submit 5 physical artworks demonstrating skill/technique.
You can earn college credit if you pass the AP Drawing exam (portfolio) in May.
Prerequisites: Art I/Advanced Art I, Art II/Advanced Art II
You may choose take Art III/IV concurrently for more studio time.
