How do you become a member of NJHS?
Initially, students must meet the following guidelines for scholarship in order to be considered for membership;
Must be in 7th or 8th grade and attended PHMS the entire first semester of the current school year
Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 94% in core classes for the first semester of the current school year and maintain good citizenship.
A NJHS member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the principal or chapter adviser to the Pioneer Heritage School Adviser
Once the student is academically qualified, he/she will receive an application for consideration for membership in February.
Upon the return of the application for membership, academically qualified candidates shall be evaluated in the areas of character, service, leadership, and citizenship by an anonymous committee of teachers to determine acceptance.
These guidelines are as follows:
Community service (required). Unpaid volunteer service to the school and/or to non-profit community-based organizations in the local and surrounding communities. 10 or more hours preferred for 2 or more organizations.
Involvement in activities within PHMS (required) and activities within the community (preferred) that are outside the normal classroom work.
Leadership opportunities (preferred). Remember, leadership does NOT have to be an elected position.
Must not have received any marks against them in citizenship for the current school year (Teacher recommendation and Discipline documentation)
Maintains a 94 or above average in core classes (Math, ILA, Science, and Social Studies)
How do I average the Fall Semester's grades?
Average only the FOUR core classes.
Add 6 pts. to each subject that is Advanced or GT.
The district semester averages are not rounded up.
Example:
GT ILA 94 +6 =100
Math = 92
Science = 95 + 6 for advanced = 101
History = 93
100 + 92 + 101 + 93 = 386/4 = 96.5* = 96
*7th-grade Semester averages are provided to the NJHS sponsors by the district. The district semester averages are not rounded up. (Ex: 93.75 does not round up to 94)
