Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I keep getting emails about my student's overdue book(s)?
The library system is automated, so it will send out an email the moment it has been over 2 weeks since a book was checked out. It does not account for holidays or events that close the library, such as the book fair. Please just remind your student to return the books as soon as possible.
Are there late fees for overdue books?
How do I know if a book is lost or damaged beyond repair?
I will consider a book "lost" if it has been over 2 months past the book's due date. The student must have looked in common areas to locate it, such as his/her backpack, classroom, bedroom, home, and car.
I will consider a book "damaged beyond repair" if the book has water damage, has multiple pages ripped or ripped out, has chewing damage, has coloring on multiple pages or words are not readable, if the pages are all stuck together, and if the book is coated in materials (such as paint, slime, or mud).

Why don't you have ______ grade-level books or leveled readers in the library?
While there may be many books best suited for certain grade levels and leveled books on the library shelves, the school library is not organized based on them. My philosophy is to promote choice, curiosity, and passion when students choose books that they want to read. However, students preview books to determine if they can read them, and certain grades may be discouraged from getting books that are typically too challenging (for example, a Kindergartener is generally not encouraged to check out chapter books until his or her teacher states that the student's reading skills have developed enough for more of a challenge).
How should I help my student take care of his/her books?
Teach him or her proper book etiquette, such as how to hold a book, turn its pages gently, and keep it clean. Ensure that the student places the book in a backpack when he or she is not reading it and that water bottles and food are not able to spill and damage the book. Also ensure that younger siblings and pets do not have access to the book. Follow overdue notices by reminding your student to return his or her book.
