Thank you for helping maintain the appropriate use of school health services! 🩺
First-aid and medical care provided by the school nurse is mainly for illness or injury that occurs at school during the school day. The School Clinic is not a Primary Care Office or Urgent Care. The nurse is qualified to collaborate with parent and a child's physician to provide an educational environment in which the child can learn and thrive. The nurse does not make medical diagnoses nor prescribe treatments or medications, but can provide treatments and medications as prescribed by a physician with a doctor's order.
Role of School Nurse
Protect student health, manage chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes, treat sudden injuries, and stop the spread of contagious diseases. They bridge the gap between health and learning so children can stay in school and succeed.
Daily Care and Treatment
First Aid: Treat sudden injuries, allergic reactions, and acute illnesses.
Illness assessment: Check temperatures, evaluate symptoms, and decide if a student needs to go home based on district exclusionary guidelines.
Medication administration: Give daily prescription or emergency prescription medicines safely.
Student Health Plans: Reviewing doctor notes, creating care guidelines, and coordinating medical accommodations with teachers to keep students safe and ready to learn during the school day. Assist with IEPs and 504s as needed.
Chronic Condition Management
Diabetes and asthma: Monitor blood sugar levels, assist with insulin, or help students use inhalers.
Severe allergies: Administer emergency treatments like epinephrine auto-injectors for severe allergic reactions.
Specialized care: Support individual health plans for students with feeding tubes or seizure disorders.
Health Screenings and Records
Routine testing / Health Screenings: Conduct standard school vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings.
Emergency Equipment: Monthly audits of all emergency meds and equipment
Chronic Disease Management: Support students with conditions like diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies.
Immunizations: Check and log all student vaccination records to ensure state law compliance.
Disease Prevention: Track and report contagious illnesses like flu or strep to public health agencies.
Broader Community Impact
Mental Health Support: Spot early signs of emotional distress, depression, or behavioral challenges.
Reducing Absenteeism: Keep kids healthy and in class.
Supporting Staff: Allow teachers and principals to focus on teaching rather than medical issues.
Referral: Help families connect with local healthcare resources.
Nurse Notice re: Absences, Excuses, Attendance Concerns, Truancy, Lack of Parent Notes, etc.
Frisco ISD school nurses are healthcare professionals dedicated to supporting students' well-being while at school. They are not authorized to provide excuses for absences unless students meet specific district health exclusion guidelines. The goal is to be present and learning while using good judgment. Minor discomfort shouldn't keep you from your education, but serious symptoms require rest at home.
If your child needs medical documentation for an absence, please:
Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician
Use a telehealth service
Visit an urgent care center
The school nurse's role is to:
Provide first aid and care for students who become ill or injured during school hours
Monitor students with chronic health conditions
Implement district health protocols
Support students who meet district exclusion criteria (such as fever, vomiting, or other contagious conditions)
Frisco ISD schools have the following on hand to assist in the event of an EMERGENCY:
Epinephrine
Albuterol
Narcan
Aspirin (for adults only)
These stock emergency meds are stored just inside the school health office, Rm A134; please stop by to familiarize yourself with these.
Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs)
Stop The Bleed emergency first aid kits, including tourniquets
*There are 10 AEDs and 10 Stop The Bleed kits at LTHS, these are wall-mounted next to each other throughout campus. FISD Nurses complete monthly audits of all emergency meds and equipment. Frisco FD also does unannounced audit on our emergency items.

ATHLETIC INJURIES
Any injury resulting from Athletics will always need to see their trainer. Athletes need to see the appropriate people for the appropriate concern.
Athletes are NOT to miss any class time for an athletic injury, not even for ice.
Ice is available in the training areas.
Trainers are available before and after school, there are designated treatment times, pre- and post-practice and/or competition.
A student should contact the trainer via email or through Sports You.
Your education matters, and being present in class is key to learning.
While perfect attendance isn't the goal, consistent presence is.
Come to School If:
You have mild sniffles or a minor cough
You have seasonal allergies

The goal is to be present and learning while using good judgment. Minor discomfort shouldn't keep you from your education, but serious symptoms require rest at home. When in doubt about whether your child should attend school, please consult with your healthcare provider rather than relying on the school nurse for attendance decisions.
Exclusion from School: https://www.friscoisd.org/page/disease-prevention-mitigation
Immunizations
Make sure your child stays up to date with their immunizations!
The State of Texas requires all immunizations to be completed, or you must obtain and notarize the proper immunization exemption form from the State of Texas that allows your child to attend school without having completed the required immunizations for reasons of conscience or religion.
If you prefer to obtain an “Affidavit Request for Exemption from Immunizations for Reasons of Conscience,” you can request up to five forms from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Please be aware that exemption requests are processed in the order they are received, and it may take up to 3 weeks for requested affidavits to be mailed.
Please remember that maintaining your child's immunization records is your responsibility.
All immunizations should be completed by the first date of attendance. A student may be enrolled provisionally if they have an immunization record that indicates they have received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine required by this rule. To remain enrolled, students must complete required doses in each vaccine series on schedule and as rapidly as is medically feasible.
