With the school year being half over, it's was about time for incoming middle schoolers to come learn more about the “Wester Experience”, specifically about fine arts.
On January 17th, all 5th graders were invited to learn more about electives such as band, orchestra, theater, choir, and art during the Fine Arts Showcase. The event happened during school hours from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Different electives such as orchestra performed and explained to the kids what you get to partake in for each class. This opportunity helped the 5th graders see all the talented kids in our school, as well as give them information and get them excited for all the fun and useful electives that they can take.
This showcase did not end up being the only look into cool electives, as there were many other events that encouraged these kids into taking these great classes. For example, the Wester band has done instrument demonstrations to kids in Curtsinger and Gunstream Elementary schools to give a deeper look into the band program.
The Fine Arts showcase was not only a wonderful time for all rising Wildcats, but for students performing for them. Our school cannot wait to lead the next generation of 6th graders into classes that most will stick with till their senior years.

On Thursday, January 18 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm is our Wester instrument drive. This drive gives opportunities to student who want to take band. Students who are either from Curtsinger, Gunstream or even to play an instrument. During this process, the 5th graders will able to try out different Band or Orchestra instrument. Also, they will be guided by our current Wester 7th/8th grader to know more in depth about their corresponding instrument. This drive really helps all upcoming future Wildcats who want to take Band or Orchestra, a way to select an instrument they could use for their Middle School years.
After the drive, all 5th graders who chose band will get to chose their top 3 most favorite instrument so that the Wester Band director can chose one of those for them. This also works the same for Orchestra but instead of picking their top 3, they will pick 2 instruments. Dont miss this oppurtunity and make sure you pick your instrument!

Some people put hours of practice into learning how to play an instrument. Here at WMS, our band and orchestra students spend at least a school year doing this, and that’s not to mention those who play instruments outside of school. Even so, there is one instrument that takes minimal effort and time to learn: the kazoo.
January 27th is National Kazoo Day, and if you can stand the noise, go for it! The kazoos we see today are usually made of plastic, but they can also be made with metal or wood as well. With a seemingly buzzing or humming noise that will plague your parents and tick off your teachers, the kazoo only requires one simple step to play it. Most people tend to blow into it, but you’re actually supposed to hum instead.
The celebrations this month haven’t ended with New Years’ Day! Pick up a kazoo this January 27th and have some fun! Play at your own risk.

Anna glanced out the window of her classroom, towards the assuage of water droplets against the beaten ground. She sighed into her arms, knowing that her walk home later that day would be a nightmare, when her head shot up. It was as if a lightbulb had sparked above her head. She glanced at the clock. “three minutes,” she thought. “3…2…1!”
The bell rang as she reached for her backpack, swinging it over her shoulder as she walked out of the room. Once out, she broke into a run, until she arrived at a door labeled ‘storage’. Without hesitation, she pushed open the door and strode in. But, she did not reappear on the other side. Instead, she stepped into a small, cozy, wooden cottage.
At first glance it seemed like a normal house, but upon closer inspection, one could find that almost imperceptibly, the walls inched farther apart each second. Suddenly, they expanded and changed shape to form a gothic manor, with a wide, elegant staircase that curved and rose to the floor above. But what was truly shocking was not the rapid shift, but the figure that stepped slowly down the staircase.
It was a woman, but not just any woman. This woman had wings. They were feathered and pitch black, with the odd gray feather making an appearance. She wore a long, black evening dress and her hair fell in a halo around her shoulders.
“Ah, Anna,” she said, her voice fond, “What is it this time?”
Suddenly shy, Anna, averted her eyes as she hesitantly stammered a response.
“U-um, well, I…” she shook her head before continuing. “It’s raining today.”
“Ah, how lovely!” the woman smiled. “...Yes, but I don’t have an umbrella, and I have to walk home…”
“Hm, yes, I can see how that would be a problem.” “...” Anna exhaled. “And I was wondering, um, if you could help me…?”
She glanced up meekly. The woman sighed, bringing her hand up to her temples.
“Anna, you know that I can't keep doing this,”
“I know…but-” “You do realize that every time I use my magic I risk getting caught?”
Anna fell silent. “I’m sorry, but I won’t do it, no matter what you say!”
The woman crossed her arms.
"But Ms. Tiana…” Anna widened her eyes, bottom lip sticking out slightly.
“No! I won’t-”
“Pleaseeee?”
She broke in. Ms. Tiana stared at her silently for a moment before sighing.
“Ugh, fine…go get my materials.”
“Thanks!”
Anna grinned before she rushed off. She returned with her arms full of candles and jars of various flower petals. Ms. Tiana got to work immediately, lighting the candles carefully before scattering the flower petals in a ring around the young girl.
“You owe me for this.”
Ms. Tiana muttered with her eyes closed. “I know, I know…”
Finally, with a flourish of her hand, the spell was complete, and the room Anna was in before vanished, to be replaced with the familiar scene of her room. She smiled, walking up toward her window where raindrops continued their merciless assault.
“Thank you Ms. Tiana…”

At the end of lunch, students throw food and trash away. But how much food gets thrown out? About 530,000 tons of food gets thrown out annually. Jessica Worth, a student at Kingston Middle School, noticed this issue and wanted to change it.
“Wasting tons of food isn’t right. Our government pays for that food, for it to only go to waste.” said sixth grader Jessica.
So, she wrote a letter to her principle to convince the school to start a composition process. The idea was to collect food and turn it into soil for the school’s garden. Food is put in a box with worms and the worms eat then convert the food into soil. The Principal, Mrs. Cornet, was intrigued by this idea and made it official in their school. Jessica, along with a group of other students, started a group called the Food Soil Program and fundraise their group to supply the compost and worms.
Wait, don't leave yet! What if..this whole article was actually fake? Don't trust everything on the web, especially if they have no sources. Stay safe out there, Wildcats!

Earlier this year, the US history teachers decided that having a trial about a tyrant named King George would a fun and exciting learning experience. The 8th graders set up in a library and had two sides: the defendant and the prosecution. After the trial, with lots of proof of what King George had done to America (AKA the prosecution), the case drew to a close and finally it was proven the King George was guilty.

The students have gotten back from a long break, but most students don't know why we have winter break and its importance. Some students and teachers like winter break because they get to relax and not worry about work. They're not wrong, but that's not the only thing about winter break.
Christmas and other holidays happen during winter break, when your family comes over bringing gifts and joy. But not everyone celebrates that holiday and that is okay. Some people had a trip like going skiing or being able to hang out with friends. This allows them to rest and catching up with family.

People at Wester are not very happy with the new phone rule. Phones have become a problem at lots of schools in the whole world. It also can affect a person’s well-being and health too. Being on your phone too much puts you at risk of getting depressed easier and having different thoughts, so fisd has taken it into control. They have made rules to only allow you on it before and after school, but during the school hours it is to remain powered off in your backpack. If you get caught on it you get a warning, but then other consequences follow if it continually happens.Make sure to follow the rules so this doesn’t happen to you. I think it is a good idea and solution about these new rules because now I get to talk to my friends more and I get to engage a lot in person and just explore and do things now that my phone was holding me back from.
