About Griffin´s Orchestras

First Year Orchestra

First Year Orchestra is for students with no background in playing their chosen string instrument. These students will be taught everything from how to read music to how to hold their instrument to tuning to how to play using vibrato. This first year orchestra is used to set the students up for success in the future. We are laying the foundation for fine musicians. The expectation for these students is that they are eager to learn and come ready to try something different. Each day we are creating good habits, learning new skills, and developing a love of music. These students will have four concerts throughout the year and will have a few other opportunities to perform. It is never too early to start private lessons. They are meant to help advance your student so he or she can be successful.

Concert Orchestra

Concert Orchestra is primarily made up of second year players. This orchestra will focus on learning new techniques as well as honing those they have already learned. This orchestra will be expected to practice and participate to the best of their ability. This ensemble will perform at all four concerts this year as well as have other opportunities for growth. All students are encouraged to take private lessons to further their skills. Sectionals before or afterschool may be called to help with furthering their music making, and will be announced well in advance.

Symphonic Orchestra

This is our advanced Orchestra class for second and third year players. The equivalent of a Pre-AP or GT class. The expectations are higher for these students, as well as the difficulty of music. This ensemble will represent our Griffin Orchestra Program at UIL Contest and Sight-Reading. In addition to UIL these students will have other opportunities to perform throughout the year. These students are expected to practice routinely outside of class in addition to required sectionals. Sectionals are rehearsals before or afterschool with the students' own sections. In preparation for All-Region Auditions in the Fall and the UIL Concert in March sectionals are crucial in preparing for success. In addition to class, individual practice time, and sectionals, the students in Symphonic Orchestra are highly encouraged to be in private lessons.
