Spelling List Information
The words will be sent home digitally the week before as part of our newsletter.
Then, each Monday, your child will bring home a new spelling list. Spelling and grammar tests will be given each Friday.
Please see below for fun spelling activities and ways to practice at home!
Spelling Tests: 10 words, Challenge words are worth one extra bonus point!
Your child will receive the list each Monday and a test will be given each Friday. If your child misses school on Monday, you can find them listed on our Weekly Newsletter.
We teach syllable division, repeated rimes, prefixes/roots/affixes, and word endings to solidify phonics and spelling skills together. See below for some examples to help you at home.
For spelling grades, your child can earn up to a maximum of a 103%-105% if they spell their challenge words correctly.
Please encourage your child to not only practice the spelling of their words each evening but also how they are written - no capitals, reversals, etc. If the word is funny and they write Funny or fuNNy, it will be counted wrong.
Grammar Tests:
Each week your child may be expected to write 3 sentences on the back of their spelling test.
1 sentence will be dictated by me and the students will write my sentence down word for word.
Sentence 2, the students will create their own sentence and circle the grammar skill they used. In the spring, for sentence 2, students will correct mistakes from a given sentence and rewrite/choose the correct revisions.
Sentence 3 will also be student created using the grammar skill of the week.
The student created sentences can be prepared and practiced at home before Friday!
Each sentence should display their application of the grammar focus for the week, capitalization, punctuation, and generally make sense.
This is something we do together daily in our classroom. The weekly focus will be in the newsletter and written on their spelling lists. Please have them practice these skills along with their spelling words each week.
Please see the rubric below that will be used for grading.

We use these activities in the classroom to practice our word wall words.
