Some resources are offered to your student at school, as well as some programs are available to use at home. We will be sharing this information as the year progresses.
Add the ones together, add the tens together.
Subtract the ones, then subtract the tens.
333 + 123 = ?
Decompose into the value of the tens and ones. Add by place value next.
Understanding as many strategies as possible deepens your number sense for larger numbers.
Pictorial Base Ten Blocks Strategy
Regroup 10 ones into 1 ten.
Expanded Form Strategy
When the ones add up to more than 10, decompose it and regroup 10 to the tens place.
Expanded Form Strategy
Regroup 10 immediately without the need to decompose.
35 + 43 = ?
Only draw the larger number.
Regroup 1 ten into its equivalent value of 10 ones.
Add the ones, tens, and hundreds.
Subtract the ones, tens, then the hundreds
Expanded Form Strategy
Regroup/"borrow" 10 and add the tens to the ones place.
Expanded Form Strategy
Regroup/"borrow" 10 immediately without the need to decompose.
2nd grade's goal is using expanded form -> 3rd grade will use standard algorithm
Base 10 Blocks and Pictorial Model is 2nd grade's goal. It would be even better if they are successful with expanded form.
58 - 23 = 35
skip counting by 5's
Split your workspace into 4 parts to stay organized.
Quadrant 1: model or visual representation with labels
Quadrant 2: equations and planning your steps in order
Quadrant 3: solve step 1's equation with a strategy
Quadrant 4: solve step 2's equation with a strategy
Finally: write an answer statement and check for reasonableness
