12 Nov 2022 (Sat) - Multicultural Human Library & Community Cultural Wealth workshop
19 Nov 2022 (Sat) - Multicultural Design Thinking Workshop
The multicultural experience is part of the Globally Minded Community Learning Programme, which provides students and community members with multicultural exposure to enhance cultural sensitivity in both their teaching and daily life.
The first experiential activity is a multicultural human library, hosted by the cultural ambassadors from WEDO Global. They are all ethnic minorities living in Hong Kong; some of them were even born here. First of all, they provided a general background for participants to understand the reasons why Hong Kong is a globalized hub for people from diverse cultural backgrounds to stay and live. Then, participants are divided into small groups to facilitate the dialogue with multiple languages. Particularly, the cultural ambassadors told their stories in secondary schools, and also some difficulties and tricks to learning Cantonese as their second, even third language. The conversation also touched upon their food and clothing culture, family and marital arrangements, and many others related to their cultural backgrounds.
In the second half of the session, Dr Jan Gube introduced a useful tool for both teachers and community members – Community Cultural Wealth – to better acknowledge the values and aspirations of people in different cultural backgrounds. From looking into six different aspects of capital that people ascribed and prescribed, we are able to appreciate people who are different from us in multiple perspectives, hence, preventing prejudice and stereotypes from affecting our decisions. Participants discussed these topics actively and gained more insights into racial discrimination and structural barriers in local society.
The second activity is a multicultural design thinking workshop, hosted by Mr Bosco Ng, our project partner and also the founder of WEDO Global. But before that, we appreciated having Mr Raymond Ho, a senior officer from The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Ethnic Minority Unit, to briefly introduce how direct and indirect discrimination could happen to ethnic minorities in both workplaces and schools in Hong Kong.
After learning about the existing rights and regulations, it was time for the participants to think out of the box and generate some new ideas. Design thinking is a systematic way of creative thinking for people to initiate new ideas to achieve a certain target. In our workshop, while the common goal is to enhance cultural inclusion in secondary school, each group has designed their own concrete target guided by Bosco. By being aware of our usual practices of making judgements about others, participants had a try to merely “see” and “hear” the situation and formulated as many possible solutions as they could imagine. It was also a good opportunity for participants who are from various backgrounds to share their ideas, and gain insights from people who are in different positions with themselves.
