Commitment to the IB Diploma Program

Although the program is a rigorous one, demanding commitment and perseverance, there is no entrance exam. That is because, as IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) explains, "prior academic success is less an indicator of ability to earn the diploma than are a student’s determination to do his or her best, willingness to be organized in order to complete the work while leading a full, balanced life, and a strong commitment to learning in and beyond the classroom."

We at Freehold Township seek students who exhibit intrinsic motivation and a love of learning. These are the most important indicators for success in the program. Additionally, please note that students must complete Algebra 2 prior to the start of the junior year in order to take IB math courses.

To acknowledge the rigor of the program, students and their parents/guardians sign a Candidate Agreement Form when registering for their junior classes, which is available in Genesis for IB students. This consent form ensures all stakeholders understand the nature of the commitment prior to beginning the two-year program.

Who can participate?

Students currently attending Freehold Township can participate in the IB Diploma Program. Those who express interest, whether as rising 9th or 10th graders, are placed on our "pre-IB" list and placed in Honors-leveled classes taught by IB-trained teachers. This helps them transition into the program with success.

Beginning with the Class of 2023, we have opened enrollment to students within our district beyond our zoning, with the exception of students zoned to attend Howell High School, which offers it's own IB Diploma Program. This includes students zoned for Colts Neck, Freehold, Manalapan, and Marlboro High Schools. Interested students are accepted based upon capacity, and they enter FTHS as freshman with the intent to begin the program their junior year. When joining Freehold Township as freshman, these students sign a Letter of Intent in Genesis solidifying their intention to enter the program in junior year. This letter of intent is similar to those required of students entering magnet programs throughout the district.

Who cannot participate?

Students enrolled in one of the FRHSD magnet programs cannot transfer into the IB Diploma Program. This is in alignment with district policy as outlined in the Magnet Program Letter of Intent.
