Volunteering Guidelines
Below is a list that explains volunteer hours that are considered community service and those that do not. Documentation of community service from the organization will be required.

Below are examples of community service that CAN count towards NHS hours.
Hospital Service
Religious Service Projects/Volunteering at a Cultural Center
Teaching Assistant- Chinese School, Hebrew School, CCD, etc.
First Aide/Fire Departments including EMT training/Police Explorers
Girl/Boy Scouts-Community Events and Eagle Scout Projects only, NO MEETING HOURS
Habitat for Humanity
ASPCA/SPCA
Public Library
Sports Camps- Volunteer service only
Monmouth County Parks (VIP: Volunteers in Parks)
American Cancer Society
Tutoring associated with a structured organization - NO Private tutoring
Youth Ministries- Tutoring, outreach, etc.
Women’s Club
Mission/Relief work projects
Soup Kitchens/Lunch Break
Senior Centers, Nursing Homes, Adopt a Grandparent
Love Inc./Project Angel
Environmental Projects
Preventative Drug, Alcohol, Violence & Abuse Programs
Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)
Red Cross (Blood Drives, Emergency preparedness, etc.)
United Way Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Adopt a Highway
DECA Club volunteer hours
4-H Club volunteer hours
Fundraising hours for non-profit organizations
Elementary/Middle School Help
Assistant for Youth Team (with verification from coach).
🚫 Unacceptable Community Service 🚫
The following are examples of what is NOT community service and will NOT count towards NHS community service hours.
Service at private doctor’s office/EMO
Service at a private law firm
Service at a family owned business or private business of any type
Private tutoring (not done through an established organization)
Babysitting (paid or unpaid)
Assisting a neighbor, friend, peer
Work with an organization where volunteering is required for your or someone else’s membership (pay to play athletic leagues where children or parents must volunteer time in order for a child to play)
Internships (personal development is not community service)
Political Campaign
Job Training, CIT/Counselor in Training: Job training is considered as getting ready for a paid position and therefore is not considered volunteer work even though it is unpaid
If you received any pay or benefits for your work it is not considered volunteer work
Chores (even if you do them for someone outside your family)
Jobs and/or Employment (even if unpaid)
Model United Nations
Math/Science competitive teams
Fundraising for a club or sports team.
Donations to organizations ( for example # cans donated to the food bank for hours)
Centra State Hospital Donations
Performances
Sports Team Manager

Remember: Not all volunteer (unpaid) work is considered community service. We are specifically looking for work with nonprofit organizations and those that directly benefit the community.
