Creative Piece: Where Did School Spirit Go

Kristina Oyer (3-2-23)

“Spirit Week and Winter Formal coming up.”

It was all over the announcements

Posters in the hallways,

Up the stairs,

Around the corner,

Whispers from friends asking if you were going to the dance or not.

It was the hot topic of what dress you were going to wear.

Where were you going to go after?

A friend’s house?

McDonalds?

Then poof.

The week of the dance came,

Where did the school spirit go?

One moment it was the dance

Then it was like dust.

Forgotten.

“Ugh, I have a test.”

“I want to go home.”

“Do we REALLY have to be here?”

Where did the school spirit go?

Pajama day and jersey day yay,

Where did the school spirit go on the other days?

“Boring”

“Repetitive”

“Stupid”.

“It’s so basic.”

“Blue and Gold Friday”

But most people weren’t feeling that spirit.

How can I dress up for the days if all I do is forget that they are a thing?

What is the point of this spirit week?

Where did the school spirit go?

“It isn’t homecoming or prom, so I don’t have to go.”

Where did the school spirit go?

1, 2, 3 upperclassmen at the dance

Where did the school spirit go?

Too busy?

Work is more important than school?

No friends at the dance?

Where did the school spirit go?

Is the school spirit on the courts?

People showing up for the games,

Student body is getting reprimanded for cheering.

Was it cheering or was it taunting?

Where did the school spirit go?

Where is the school spirit if people don’t remember?

Where is the school spirit if there are no memories of school spirit?

How is there going to be school spirit if people don’t see the purpose in dressing up for the spirit days?

How is there school spirit if we are getting hushed?

Showing our spirit?

Where did the school spirit go?

Frewsburg's New Cafeteria

Erich Thompson (11-17-22)

When students returned to school this Fall, many were excited to see a completely new school cafeteria! Instead of large tables with benches (or singular desks and chairs like the past couple of years), this new cafeteria features many smaller, circular tables with 2-4 chairs each. Also, the renovated cafeteria now includes several booths in addition to the smaller tables. Students seem to be in agreement that the new lunchroom is far better than the old one. Nate Colley, a junior, said that the new cafeteria is “definitely better than the old one” and that the “atmosphere is a lot better.” Another student, Juvenal Diaz,  junior, said that it is “much more appealing to the eye.” Overall, it seems like the students approve of the new cafeteria and are excited about the renovations!

Open House

Jacob Sears (11-10-22)

In the fall of 2019, my first year as a Frewsburg student, I had an experience like nothing I had ever done before: Frewsburg Open House. The opportunity to go around and see the different teachers and clubs that Frewsburg had to offer was an exciting new premise. However, my favorite part of the open house came at the end of the night: the viewing of the school video. A school-wide music video? Who could imagine such a thing? One thing is for sure: that evening I knew that I had made the right choice to enroll at Frewsburg. Unfortunately, the next two years didn’t see this tradition continue. We blame COVID for things like this, but I would say that a lack of school spirit caused by the pandemic is truly the reason. However, we got our open house back this year! New and returning students could visit their teachers, look around the school, and see what clubs and activities are offered. The clubs represented included the Structural Integrity club, the yearbook club, Pep Club, the Mock Trial team, Unified Sports, Student Council, and the Frewspaper. The biggest event of the open house, of course, was the viewing of our open house video. The video, coordinated by Pep Club advisors Mr. Blanchard and Miss Caldwell, was a great success and a hit at the open house event. We can see in the video that “Frewsburg is back!”, with senior stars including Jacob Sears, Kelson Laska, Teresa Mole, Brayden Lobb, Madigan Collver, Jacey Cappa, Zachary Carr, Julianna Main, and Emily Wakamatsu. A successful open house? I think so.
