Are you bored? Need a new flick to watch? Here's my top picks from netflix!
Black Mirror
If you're looking for something to keep you on the edge of your seat, I love the show Black Mirror. It’s an anthology series which means that the episodes don't need to be watched in order because each episode has a different cast and storyline. I recommend against watching the first episode, though, as it has graphic material and the storyline of it is not very interesting. This series is usually set in the future with new different advancements in technology, usually resulting in a problem. The show takes an interesting stance on how technology is impacting us as a species and is very thought provoking. DISCLAIMER: many of the episodes contain some adult content so keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to watch.
My favorite episodes include: Shut Up and Dance, Men Against Fire, Playtest, White Christmas, and San Junipero.
Inception
Finally, to finish off the “Thrillers” category, we have Inception. This movie is a rollercoaster as you follow Leonardo DiCaprio’s character through his secret missions in the dreams of others. Have your whole understanding of how the world works and what reality is turned upside down by this great thriller.
You
I wasn’t really sure where to put this show in the genres, but Google said it is a thriller even though it includes elements of a drama or a romance. This show follows Joe, a stalker. The show is written in a way that you sympathize with Joe sometimes, but immediately after having that thought, you scold yourself. Unlike many other shows like this, the second season of You is just as good as the first. DISCLAIMER: this series includes adult content
The Office
If you haven't seen The Office, then you're missing out. It is one of the funniest shows on Netflix. It follows Michael Scott as he manages a branch of a paper company. His employees all have such different and opposing personalities. But, above all, Michael is clueless, causing him and his crew to end up in some less than ideal, but completely hilarious situations. The first season of this “mock-umentary” is most definitely the most boring, but you just have to get through it to understand the personality of each character.
Ferris Buller’s Day Off
Yet another classic, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, is one of the best movies on Netflix and is a must see for everyone. The movie follows Ferris as he stays home from school and goes on a crazy adventure with his best friend Cameron. Anymore I could say about the movie would be a spoiler, but with this extra time off of school, I very much recommend the movie!
The Platform
If you're looking for a movie, you should definitely check out The Platform. Originally in Spanish, but voice dubbed in English, this movie follows a man who enters a vertical prison where you are randomly placed each month. The higher levels of the prison get more food and a better selection, whereas the bottom gets their scraps and crumbs. The movie is a statement on capitalism as a whole and, once again, gives an interesting perspective on our society in general. DISCLAIMER: this movie contains adult content, so watch at your discretion.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
Have you ever seen a horror movie and said, “I would never make that dumb decision!” Well, if you answered yes, then this movie is for you. During this film, periodically, options come up on the screen which alter the story and plot of the movie. You choose what happens. The film itself is great ,and I’ve seen all the endings and every one is unique. Depending on what you choose, the film could be anywhere from about a half hour to two hours to get an ending. You follow a boy named Stefan in his quest to publish his very own video game, and depending on how you control him, the reviews for the game could be good or bad.
Jane the Virgin
This show is probably my favorite one on this list, if I’m being honest. It follows the chaotic life of Jane Villanueva, a Catholic, Latina 23 year-old-woman. Her mother was a teen mom, and she is determined to be different. This was until a routine check up had flipped her life around, putting her in the center of a love triangle, murder mystery, and more. That may sound like a crazy, overly dramatic show, and well, it is, but the writers know that it’s over the top and play into it making the show that much more interesting. There are seasons and 100 episodes, and although that may seem long, it is very much worth the watch!
The 100
This show is about a future reality where the world has been destroyed by nuclear weapons. A percentage of wealthy people end up in a space station for many years because the world is not liveable, but there is a problem with their air supply. They don't think it has been enough time away from the earth, but decide to send 100 teens to test the livability of the land. Little do they know what has survived the radiation and what is happening down there. The teens are forced to learn to live on their own and save the human race. I never finished the final season because it started to get too cheesy for me then, but the first few seasons are great. DISCLAIMER: this TV series contains adult content.
