Most people have seen that Chase is very different from who he used to be before the fall, but some people still have doubts as to whether or not he has really changed. Shoshanna is one of them.
In the last chapter we saw how Shoshanna’s opinion of Chase has changed from the beginning of the book till now. In this chapter, it is the first time we will hear from Joel’s perspective and see how he reacts to the situation he has been put in.
In this chapter, Chase has several “AHA Moments” when he realizes the impact that he has had on Joel’s life. He also finds out more about what he was like before his accident.
At this point in the book we know Chase is hanging out with a new group of friends that are in the video club. He has also been working hard on his video project.
In this chapter, Chase is put in a situation where he needs to make a decision, and answer some of the tough questions he’s thought of: Who does he want to be? The person he was before the accident or the person he has grown into with his “Restart”? What do you think he should choose?
Towards the end of the chapter, we also notice Brendan has two “AHA moments”.
Can you spot them? How might this change things?
Chase and his old crew find themselves in a situation they are very familiar with, sitting in the principal’s office.
What Chase does next in this chapter, will tell us a lot about him
We will also see how his “so called” friends, Aaron and Bear, and his new video club friends respond to the incident. Let’s find out what happens.
In this chapter we find out how Shoshanna feels about Chase and the incident in the music room. As a reader, it’s important to stop and think about how we feel about the characters in the book.
Chase has made many changes since his fall, but is it enough? Should Joel forgive Chase? Whose side should Brendan be on? Think about your own feelings about the characters as you listen to this chapter.
Chase has a Major AHA Moment in this chapter where he finds out something about his past self from Bear and Aaron.
Can you notice and note the "AHA Moment"?
What does Chase realize? What do you think he will do next?
In this chapter, we hear from Brendan and hear his thoughts on what happened in the Music Room. Brendan, himself has an AHA Moment.
Can you notice and note the "AHA Moment"?
Find the AHA Moment and ask yourself: “How might this change things?”
Before you read, think to yourself:
Do people deserve second chances? Does Chase deserve a second chance because he has no memory of the things he did and he believes he has changed?
Think about what a true friendship looks like and the people who have been true friends to him since his accident.
In this chapter Joel gets to decide for himself if he thinks Chase has changed. He also reflects on his own past and knows that it doesn’t define him.
In his own words “I’ve been victimized, but I don’t need that to define me as a victim”. Do you agree with this? Let’s read to find out more about what Joel realizes about Chase and himself.
In this chapter, Aaaron, Bear and Chase are at Mr. Solways at the senior center. Throughout the text, Chase has made plenty of mistakes, but in this chapter we will see what he does next.
Brandi Chastain, a US soccer player once said, “You’re going to make mistakes in life. It’s what you do after that counts”. Do you agree with this?
In this chapter, we continue to find out what happens at the senior center through Shoshanna’s eyes.
Will Chase give back the metal?
Will he face Mr. Soloway with the truth?
Let’s find out.
This chapter is our second to last chapter and it is the last time we will hear from Chase’s perspective.
In this chapter Chase will face many people that he has hurt in his past. Let’s see how this plays out and if honesty, kindness, and forgiveness will win.
In our final chapter, we hear from Brendan Espinosa and his final thoughts. This part of the text is always a favorite part of mine, as I get to see how the author ties everything up.
As you read, what is the mood the author is trying to create in this final chapter? How does the author leave the reader feeling? Is it hopeful? Joyful? Serious? Disappointed? That’s up to you to decide based on what you read. Let’s listen and see what you think.
